12/21 Trip to Skinny Raven for new shoes! (apparently my $20 shoes might suck)

12/21 Tuesday continued - Did 15 minutes elliptical warm up, 2 miles on the treadmill (5.0/12:00), cooled down walking for 15 minutes... did some sit ups, I should really have been integrating more core work in my time off.  Not sure how to resume running without starting back at the beginning... my leg still hurts a bit...
I feel like I've lost some part of that mental component, but hopefully it will come back... I can't really imagine running for an hour straight, can't believe that was roughly 25 days ago.  But... 4 months ago, I couldn't imagine ever running 5 miles in a row...so... I can get it back... and then I'll get 10 and then my half marathon!

12/21 Tuesday - My wonderful dad Joe took me to Skinny Raven, where I got my gait analyzed on a treadmill and stood on this machine that calculates where your feet are supporting your weight and what kind of support you need.

The expert thought I wasn't having pronation or supination (not sure exactly what those are) that required additional shoe support... he showed me how my foot was staying in a particularly good position on my right side (the side that has been having shin splints)... my left foot was being a little less particularly good...and he said that it seemed my right foot/calf was working a bit harder than the left one and may be stabilizing the left one a bit...

So I got a neutral Nike shoe with inserts to support (but not falsely create) my arch... and also wool socks since they are apparently better than cotton socks...

And then my dad surprised me by getting me two pairs! (One for indoor and one for outdoors! I'm having them studded to be a real Alaskan runner!)

Very exciting!

Injured = Long break... followed by re-start!

12/20 Monday - 11 day break? Felt REALLY LONG... 60 minutes on the elliptical machine... 15 minutes warm up, 30+ minutes at 8, the machine claimed I burned over 600 calories...felt good, leg didn't hurt too badly since it didn't have to move...

12/8 Wednesday - Attempted running on the treadmill... warm-up, ran a half a mile total, couldn't keep running... walked out the rest of my 3 mile planned run...felt injured in my right leg... interesting that I stopped keeping my journal at that point and didn't write about this!  Felt very defeated...

12/7 Tuesday 3 mile tempo - FAIL - my body hurt bad today... didn't get out of work until 5:30 PM... too tired to exercise at that point.  And I need to write an insane paper tomorrow... So, sorry...can I still run my half marathon without exercising today? Hopefully...

5 miles OUTSIDE! (or maybe 5.5-6 according to Mapmyrun) (or 7.5 to 8 if you include the walking)

Why does it matter that it is outside?  I have heard a few times that the treadmill takes only 80% of the effort and that treadmill running is easier... so, I've been trying to keep getting outside so that I'll be able to get outside when I need to and because I don't just want to be an indoor runner.  Today was cold, but I liked being out there, seeing everyone running.  The day was really clear, the sun was out, and my lungs didn't act up at all.  I just can't believe I'm actually doing this!  I saw a few dogs, but I still feel like people aren't taking me seriously out there... these serious dude runners kept playing chicken with me by not getting out of my way.  Until I ducked aside to allow them to run their straight course.  Is this because they are men or because they are serious.  I am not sure.

Wore shorts and a t-shirt at 35 degrees Fahrenheit... nice. 1 mile warm up, 5 miles around the reservoir... 1 mile cool down... brr! 64 minutes... 12 min. 48 seconds/mile... (though I looked on-line and tried to map my run and it came up as between 5.5 and 6 miles!) (11.6-10.6 minutes/mile)

3 mile run on the treadmill!

3 mile tempo at 12.5 minute pace - 15 minute warm up at 3.0 plus stretching, 3 miles in 37m 30s, 10 minute cool down with some stretching. Glad I got this one done, but I might only get 2 runs in this week...my right shin is hurting a bit and it is hard to tell what level of pain is concerning for me.  The first few minutes of the run were the worst and then my shin stopped hurting.  Seems like shin splints to me since they got better once the muscle was warmed up and in motion.  I'm going to work hard this next week to get in all three of my runs.  I'm shocked that I can run 8 miles in a week and be even slightly disappointed since I am breaking patterns with every step!
